I saw this in a theatre today, and have 2 questions about Daria's drive into the desert:
- I thought Daria wasn't sent by her employer to the conference, that she struck off on her own, instead of showing up for work, which puzzled her employer. Daria wouldn't tell him where she was, or tell Mark/"Carl Marx" why she was headed to Phoenix. Yet, after she got to know Mark, she told Mark that she was on her way to a business conference there. Could she have been planning to blow up the conference site to stop the dunes development ?
- When Daria stopped in the desert town, and was surrounded by the children: did they ask her for "a piece of your ass" ? When she got away from the kids, some of them continued to fight over something - but what ?

- She could have.
- The kid asks "Can we have a piece of ass?" and Daria answers "Are you sure you know what to do with it?".
I looked through the scene a couple of times, and they're not fighting for anything.

I understood it differently:
Daria's employer wanted her to go to Phoenix, and expected her to fly (probably on the corporate jet:-). She in turn had committed to being in Phoenix as requested. BUT she decided on her own to drive instead of fly (partly so she could stop at the desert town), and in order to make it to Phoenix on time, she left L.A. at least one day earlier.
