it's been a while since i saw it, but i think i was rather suprised about who the actual killer was, i think i always thought throughout the movie that it was the mother. but here's something i was wondering about, what happened afterwards? the movie suddenly ends with him locking her (the mother) in the room with the corpse if i remememer right, and i wished it had continued a bit longer and developed on that story right there.
at night before the dance hall shook,
susanne laid back with all coming through,

recognise her somehow sometime from somewhere before,

The story does not go on any longer because it is the perfect, "full circle", ending. Madame Forneau becomes a prisoner of someone whom she has imprisoned.
I imagine in my mind that she stays locked up for days before anyone thinks to look for her in the atti. When Mdme. is finally found, she has killed herself inside that locked room- the regret at all the pain she's caused and the horror of staying with a rotting corpse is too much for her to bear.
As for Luis- in my mind he is found by the authorities still sitting by the door, and is carted off to a mental instituion where he spends the rest of his days.
