They even sound alike!!

Actually Dustin Hoffman was offered the role of Michael Corleone before Pacino. They are both similar in that they are short ethnic New Yorker types, and therefore both unlikely leading men. But Pacino ended up somewhat typecast as gangsters, while Pacino had the more quirky roles.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of Hollywood (;-p)
