Is he supposed to symbolize something? He's seen throughout the entire opening credits (so you think that he is going to play some significant character in the movie) and then is never seen again.
Why couldn't they just bring in the footage themselves?
Legend is that director Paul Mazursky was the "bike man."

That was how important footage was delivered to TV stations back then. A motorcycle could leave with the film as soon as the shooting was done, before the equipment was packed up, etc. It was faster than a car and could get through traffic more quickly. This also freed up the camera crew to go on to another story. Makes for a pretty cool movie opening too.
