When Butch calls him Sundance at the card game

Butch just kind of lets it slip in passing by calling him Sundance when he is being challenged to a duel by the gambler sore loser.
Did he knowingly do that to stop the shootout and death of the gambler to resolve it without violence or was that just a lucky chance for the gambler?
I'd like to think it's the former to show how smart Butch is to end the situation without violence.
