The bass player hardly moved her left hand on the fretboard.

Those scenes were actually filmed in the Gateways club off King's Road in Chelsea. It had been in business since the thirties and was the primary meeting place for gay women in 60's London. The stairway that Mercy Croft descends was the real one. It was the typical narrow passageway leading to what was usually a dark pit of a space - it was strange to see how well lit those scenes were. Smithey - the bartender - was one of the co-managers along with Gina Evans (Ware), the dark haired woman at the entrance table. The location of the club was 239 King's Road and unmarked on the outside. After the movie came out the place was flooded with new customers.
