Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Killing of Sister George

A friend said that George was based on Agnes Moorehead. I've never heard this from anyone except for one friend and really don't see the connection. Anyone know any more on this?

A much more likely model is the British journalist Nancy Spain. It was well known that she was a lesbian (according to Wikipedia she was a regular at the Gateways club)and she frequently appeared on the radio in panel games alongside Lady Isobel Barnet, a very refined lady, who may well have been the model dfor Mercy.

I myself have never heard the reference to Agnes Moorhead, but somehow I doubt it. For starters, while Moorhead's sexuality was a matter of speculation for years, she did have two husbands along the way, for whatever that was worth. As for her behavior, Moorhead's reputation was as a consummate professional who would never have lowered herself to the antics that June Buckridge gets into here.
I remember reading somewhere that Moorhead was one of the best-liked performers in Hollywood; it is doubtful that anyone would have said that about her if she were anything like June Buckridge, whatever her sexuality may have been.
Never mess with a middle-aged, Bipolar queen with AIDS and an attitude problem!
