It has always amazed me that this film received a 'U' certificate in the UK on its release. If you think about the cock fighting scene and, especially, the scene where Bathsheba opens Fanny Robin's coffin and finds the dead baby lying beside her, then Troy arrives and kisses Fanny on the lips - I still find that extremely difficult to watch - you wonder what the film censor was thinking! I would rate it '15' even in these permissive times.

I don't think any of those scenes are too bad really (but perhaps it's because we live in Asia - we've become desensitised, you often get photos of dead people on the news and the front of the newspaper!). However, I doubt my 11 year old would get as far as the cockfighting scene.she'd be bored stiff and off doing something else even before Gabriel's sheep went over the cliff!

I was surprised it was a U certificate but saying it should be a 15 is going a little too far the other way. It should be a PG to let parents know there are some scenes that might not be suitable for young children.
