Here are a couple of direct references to Far From the Madding Crowd in Scorsese's 1995 film Casino:
- The scene in Casino where Sam (DeNiro) "instantly falls in love" with Ginger (Sharon Stone) who is throwing chips in the air in slow motion after her john accused her of stealing from him, mirrors the scene in Far From the Madding Crowd where Boldwood sees Bathsheba at the market for the first time and falls in love (she is throwing grain in the air in slow motion, belonging to two farmers trying to scam her).
- In Casino, Ginger asks her husband Sam for 25000$ for her former lover Lester (James Woods), but refuses to tell Sam what it's for. He tells her it's not a question of money but rather of trust and they end up fighting over it.
In Far From the Madding Crowd, the roles are reversed: Bathsheba's husband Troy asks her for 20 guineas for his former lover Fanny, but won't tell her why. Bathsheba also tells him it's not about the money and they also end up fighting over it. - During Boldwood's Christmas party in Far From the Madding Crowd, Bathsheba is singled out from the other guests in the shot by filters darkening the image all around her, just like Ginger in Casino (at the party where she wears a golden dress and Sam fires a young guy working for him because of a compliment he made about his wife).
