Way to miss the point of the story

What, exactly, would a happy ending have been? If Holman deserts, he'll in time be run out of China or killed by either the Japanese or the Communists, and if he is run out of China he'll have desertion charges hanging over his head. If he stays in the Navy until his enlistment is up, he'll still be killed or run out of China.

As others here have stated —there is no other possible ending. This is because the story is character-driven, character-centric.
It's an action-filled flick yes –mightily entertaining –but Holman's search for himself is the engine of the story.
He has no way to return home no matter what he does.
The point of the tale is him realizing this.
