A woman married to a wealthy socialite, is compromised by the accidental death of a man who had been romantically pursuing her, and is forced by her mother-in-law to assume a new identity to save the reputation of her husband and infant son. She wanders the world, trying to forget her heartbreak with the aid of alcohol and unsavory men, eventually returning to the city of her downfall, where she murders a blackmailer who threatens to expose her past. Amazingly, she is represented at her murder trial by her now adult son, who is a public defender. Hoping to continue to protect her son, she refuses to give her real name and is known to the court as the defendant, "Madame X."
If i were her, i would never abandon my son and my husband!!! Is she stupid??? If i were her, i would go to hell the envious mother-in-law

Ok, "stupid" is not the most correct word for describing the plot (sorry but english is not my first language), but surely there something that not convince me. Very few women woluld let her mother-in-law to ruin their life this way. Would you abandon your son??? i woldn't, no matter what. It's not a bad film, but over-dramatic in some aspects

She loved her son enough that she wanted to spare him and his father any scandal she would have brought on them. Of course if you think about it, the mother in law covered up the murder Holly really didn't have to leave.
Flesh may age, but a franchise is forever. -

The mother-in-law, who never liked her daughter-in-law, realized the death of the lover could work to her advantage, using it as an excuse to get her to leave by convincing her, even though it was an accident, that it would ruin the future reputations of her husband and son.

Oh for Heaven's Sakeit's a MOVIE, not life, and a melodrama with a plot that stems from the style of 19th Century Theatre! It's not supposed to be logical; it's supposed to manipulate our emotions shamelessly. If you require a plot that's logical you'd eliminate half of the films made even today, not to mention almost the entire canon of Shakespeare, the Greeks, and Restoration comedy. Madame X has an absurd plot, but it works: If you can suspend your disbelief, you'll need a box of Kleenex to get through it.
