Stella never lost herself; Holly did.

I thought so too. I actually cried during this film, which I hardly ever do! Never cried during SD though. I also thought the character of MADAME X had far better reasons for doing what she did than Stella. I never bought into Stella's reason for leaving. It seemed hasty and overboard to me, though maybe I missed something??
Anyway, MADAME X should have a higher rating than it doesat least somewhere in the 7 range. It is very effective!!
Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

        You have a point there.
        Stella Dallas
        is a
        big
favorite of mine. Never failed in causing me to tear up. Stella had a sense of self and actual purpose, the purpose of seeing her daughter achieve what she considered a "better" life. In comparison, Holly was on a total free-fall to self-destruction. Holly's life was one of real tragedy.
