I'm not a huge fan of most of Takei's complaints regard Trek, but I have to agree with him on the new Trek films. They've been successful, and they breathed new life into the franchise, no question. But I also agree that they tend to be action-adventure flicks that don't explore a lot in the way of deeper themes. That's not entirely bad, of course. Roddenberry could be pretentious and ham-fisted with his ideas, as could some of the NextGen films. Still, I feel like the reboots pale in comparison to most of the TOS films.
I disagree on TAS, though. For a Saturday morning cartoon show, I thought animated Trek took some real risks at times. The Magicks of Megas-Tu (I think that was what it called) was downright controversial for the era, IIRC.
