At the finale of the film when O'Brien challenges the chief baboon in hand to hand combat and after a bloody battle kills him, the remainder of the baboons then close in on O'Brien. Are they closing in to kill O'Brien in revenge for killing their leader or are they showing their respect to O'Brien because he has shown himself to be the stronger in killing their leader?

I think this is purposely left open to your interpretation, BUT.technically, he is now King of the baboons, which also leaves him open to be challenged by another.which I think, by the screams from the baboons as the screen goes dark, is what is happening. Humans who try and upset the balance of nature, invariably, get the worst of it (unless you're in a Stephen Spileberg film)..and based on the on-going theme of the movie, the lives out of balance, that would be MY interpretation.
