Who committed the first murder at the start of the movie? The scene near the end was so confusing I didn't understand who did it.

I believe Dominique Ballon committed the first murder, possibly trying to kill Maria. Hence the look between her and her husband in their first scene together when Clouseau goes off to interrogate Maria - he is protecting her for the rest of the film.
