This was a mess of a movie, Richardson himself wasn't entirely happy with the final product and quite why it was ever nominated for Best Picture is a puzzle - part of the British invasion of cinema perhaps at the time. Finney was adequate in the role, despite not entirely charming us over with the disagreeable character and York was seriously out of her depth and not yet at the top of her craft.
But I must say, the film improves considerably when two faces are on the screen. Edith Evans and Joyce Redman absolutely steal the show - absolutely hilarious, moving and easily the best actors on the screen. Watch how at ease Edith in particular is on the screen in comparison to her co-stars. She is just a masterful actress, who quietly though hilariously walks away with the entire film. She does stand and deliver!
