There seem to be more detractors than admirers on this site. Quite surprising to me especially from "film buffs"! I'm with you on this one. A wonderfully entertaining and creative picture with a unique sense of time and place. Delightful and award-worthy in so MANY ways! . . . Anyone who believes otherwise is "a perfect goat!" (written, of course, with tongue placed firmly in cheek)

Goes to show one man's tripe is another man's ambrosia. I think it's delightful, creative and totally engaging great script, great acting, cinematography, direction, score, and perfect sense of time and place. Well deserving of the accolades it's received. Trend-setter in several ways, too.

Perhaps not the worst, but it was awful. Supposed to be comedy? I didn't laugh once and couldn't even finish watching, it was so dull and pointless. I tried again tonight just don't get it, was compelled to say something here. The joke is on the audience, and on the Academy.

Agreed! They chose this joke of a movie over a great movie like The Great Escape???
I guarantee if the Vietnam War had not been going on The Great Escape might have swept the Oscars!
Sidney Pointier is my fave of all time but TGE was absolutely unfairly snubbed in my opinion. -

MOST OF THESE BEST PICTURE WINNERS ARE FORGOTTEN
As if, Forrest Gump still gets marathon reruns on TV.
And Annie Hall and Rain Man are still popular.

In order to enjoy this film it helps to accept the style in which it was directed, which I was able to do. It is a bit much, but the film also has some real humor and good dialogue, with some very good performances. Diane Cilento is something of a revelation here, and I have long felt Susanah York is an underrated actress from that period. She is very good here as well.
So I hardly agree with the OP. -

I'm slowly slogging my way through all of the Best Picture winners and just finished Tom Jones last night. I would agree w/ others here that it doesn't work nearly as well in the present day but that it definitely has some good things going for it too. I would put it somewhere in the lower end, though not at or near the very bottom at all. There have definitely been some dogs along the way - I'd sort of been looking forward to The Greatest Show on Earth and found it pretty much as bad as I'd heard (although intermittently entertaining in a dopey way). Crash and Forest Gump are still the worst two, for me. Fifteen more to go.
