Yes, I'm aware that this movie is backward and hopelessly sexist (although I think they're being ironic in "Femininity"note the line "Hide the real you!" delivered with humor).
My question is are we meant to believe that Nancy and Mr. Hamilton are a love interest at the end of the movie? That's certainly the way I understood it as a kid, but of course now I realize the large age difference. So is he flirting, or just being kind to a sweet kid? Any thoughts?

I guess it really depeneds on how old Tom Hamilton and old Nancy were supposed to be in the movie. I guess Nancy was supposed to be 16-18? And Tom was 20-24? Not too bad for those days.

Abso-bloomin-lutely! How can you doubt it after the scene where he is waiting at the bottom of the stairs for her with her slipper in his hand. That is an iconic romance flag. Hayley has never been more adorable, and Peter Brown played all of his scenes (wish to god there had been more) perfectly. Just the right amount of quizzical bemusement at the situation he has found himself in!

Oh yeah, absolutely. Never been too sure how old Tom Hamilton was meant to be, but he can't have been more than 8-10 years older than Nancy, could he? Even if it was slightly more, then it wasn't an objectionable gap. And yeah, I wish there had been more scenes with him, he was gorgeous! Talk about a beautiful stranger! Him appearing at the bottom of the stairs & putting Nancy's shoe on for her was right out of a fairy tale. Oh, if I'd been Nancy I'd have felt soooo smug walking into the dance on his arm. Sigh. His face during the ceremony for 'his mother' was brilliant too, I always giggle at that.

It's a pleasure to read the comments of incurable romantics! We don't get enough romance in our entertainment as it is, and we are mocked for liking it. So thanks for expressing it so fearlessly and well.

In those days people did not care as much about the age differenceas they do today. Besides my parents arenine years apart and have been married 50 years. I have an aunt and Uncle 11 years apart. They been married 39 years.
I think that Tom did fall fir Nancy. He waited until after she finished high school, then married her.
