I recorded it on TCM the other night and my TiVo cut the film off just as the car and the boat were escaping. Can someone please tell me what happened after that? Just be sure to label your post a SPOILER. Thanks!

It was almost over.
Helicopters stopped King's car and took the boy. King, dying from radiation, sped off and crashed the car off a bridge into the water.
Bernard suddenly shot Freya, his artist girlfriend.
Helicopters also monitored the boat, where it was clear Simon and Joan were also dying of radiation.

Additional spoilers
At one point Simon and Joan (not really knowing - or convinced - that they are dying) debate what they should do, and Joan says "we can't leave those children there" and I couldn't tell if we were supposed to think the boat turned around to go back, or not.
It ends with the voices of the children plaintively screaming "Someone - please help us - we're in here - help us, please!" as the camera looks on impassively at the town from the sea.
