Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Carnival of Souls

The "Mad Men" episode entitled "Lost Horizon" contains some subtle but undeniable allusions to "Carnival of Souls."
At one point, a moody and reflective Don Draper is driving at night along a lonely stretch of highway in the Midwest. Suddenly, in the passenger seat beside him (as opposed to glaring at him from outside the window), sits the "ghost" of a business partner who has recently died and with whom he has a brief conversation.
Cut to next scene: Peggy is alone in an office building in which the electricity has been turned off and which has been stripped of most of its furnishings. As she strolls through the dark, empty corridors amid all the abandoned clutter, she suddenly hears eerie organ music coming seemingly out of nowhere.
This is "Mad Men" at its existentialist best, and the makers looked back to a great work for their inspiration.

Great minds really do think alike.
