All four of the major supporting charactersthe minister, the landlady, the doctor, and the young manhave one important thing in common: they are all figures of judgment. Except for the young man, who is clearly a lecher from the start, they all seem pleasant and friendly at first but soon they're all judging her harshly. If you try to put the situation into a real-life context, it's striking how little sympathy any of them have toward her. She's just gone through a traumatic experience and is clearly having problems, and all they can think of is to heap scorn on her. Notice how the minister fires her immediately after she starts playing "sacrilegious" music during a practice session; he doesn't even think to give her a second chance or to ask what's bothering her. Even the doctor, after hearing her entire story, basically just tells her to grow up. It's among the reasons why I suspect these characters aren't real people, just manifestations of her own insecurities.
