I wonder if Fats didn't somehow manage to not drink much of his booze, or to have Bert Gordon (Preacher, or Johnny) bring him a bottle that was cut with water or juice. Fats probably realized that Eddie was going to be tough to beat, and figured that if he could get Eddie to drink, then he (Fats) could still prevail.
