The first half of this movie is essentially an early B-movie version of the Terminator. That was my first reaction to seeing it. It's even got a similar tension about it.
MST3K seemed to know this too, making the reference "I'm looking for Sarah Connor" when Thor first hops in that guy's car.

Watched it tonight for the first time, you took the words right out of my mouth! I kept yelling THIS IS THE TERMINATOR at the tv! This movie was really good and fun to watch for sure!

That was the first thing that hit me. The first half is a precursor to TERMINATOR, including the romantic (and tragic) sub-plot between the pursued lovers. I know Cameron grew up on these films, and has mentioned how they were influences to him.
And Thor resembled Arnie's younger brother, and had the same intimidating "acting style".
Actually, it's an interesting effort, considering its non-existant budget, and could also be considered one of the very first 'Indie Films'. All great talents often begin by mopping floors and so on, and Tom Graef was up to the challenge. Sad that it didn't eventually help launch a better career for him.
He had a bit part in Roger Corman's NOT OF THIS EARTH, prior to making TFOS. Makes me wonder why he didn't hook up with Corman like other beginning directors who went on to more impressive careers.
Anyways, I still dig watching it every so often.
