POSSIBLE SPOILERS
This could be a decent episode - and most of it is - but my enjoyment of it is greatly marred by a plot hole the size of Mount Everest. You probably already know what I'm talking about: If the mission was planned for him to be asleep for 40 years, but he woke himself up, HOW DID HE SURVIVE? There wouldn't be any food onboard, and if there was he would have to deal with his waste. Not to mention how he would've got completely insane in a tiny spaceship for that long; even if he did have some means of diversion. -

Totally right! I know that he was in love with Mariette Hartley and all, but it was absurd for him to take himself out of stasis. And if the technology to keep her young existed, then why couldn't they have discussed it before he took off.
I think this story is a futuristic retelling of O'Henry's
Gift of the Maji
. Each person gives up something important to them for the person they love.
Very romantic but unsatisfying.
Never say never

This episode tugs at my heartstrings while outraging my common sense.
Both for the reasons you mention and for the reason another poster mentioned of why they didn't discuss her going under before he left.

The Long Morrow (1964)
has a lot of goofs listed on its page. There was no consistency between distance, speed and duration of the journey. Also, the twins paradox was not taken into account. It was well known as Einstein died in 1955. The suspended animation plot insults the intelligence of those who are at all familiar with interstellar travel. I believe the success of the TZ owes to the fact that many episodes are dumbed down to the lowest common denominator.
BTW, that volcano on Jupiter was caused by a crashing comet! Maybe they had a premonition about the volcanoes on Io, one of Jupiter's moons.

Same dude that played Gary Seven and same gal that played Zarabeth (Spock's girlfriend) in Star Trek's Assignment Earth and All Our Yesterdays. Oddly enough, both of those characters lived many, many years in those two time centric episodes of ST-TOS.
