I've been using some "all time best" lists from some books to discover some older movies and I've been stunned by how different a good number of romantic movies (from best romance lists) from the 50's are from what is the regular hollywood romantic films from 30's, 40's and later ones.
Movies that instead of happy endings, you kind of feel sorry for one of the parts ending up with a very non-empathetic partner. Most usually it's the woman that ends up having to settle down.
Maybe coming from the rise up of Brando's type in Streetcar or Waterfront, or Sinatra's type in most of his movies, and of course Newman's partnership with Ritt.
This made me curious for more movies like this. Are there other ones I should be looking for?
