possible spoiler:
WHO do you think took the photographs (taken at some unknown earlier time) of Florence & Julien together as a happy couple that were developed at the conclusion.
I tend to doubt that a small 1950's camera would have a self-timer feature. -

I would agree with this, though it could be implied that the drunk friend or some other friend took them at some point. The photographs are required, since they are the only time Julian and Florence are together on-screen, a parallel to Vronique and Louis being together only on the front page of a newspaper after they go to jail.

if it bothers you so much that you need rationalization, then here it is: yes cameras did have self timers in the 60's. i dont know when they were actually invented, but they have been around for a while. (for example, i have an olympus om-1 35mm slr camera made in 1972 with a self-timer). of course they werent all digital and sophisticated as they are now, but they worked just the same.
so, they could have set it up on a rock or tripod to time. or, they could have been with friends (which wouldnt have been uncommon for this cheating couple since they hung out together with that one drunk dude). i wouldnt let it bug you because it was obviously such a minor detail that they didnt feel the need to rationalize it at all.

I always thought the tourist took them. They had 3 pictures left. So what was the other pictures on the film other then of those two. Obviously Julien hung out with Florence in public because the guy in the bar mentioned that he knew her from Julien. So it is very likely the tourist just happen to take their picture. THe movie is full of coincidenses and happenstance.

Hi,
I used to work in a camera store years ago and we handled a lot of used cameras. We actually had one of those old "spy" cameras once. Although I don't remember specifically whether it had a timer on it, most cameras had a port for a cable release (the cable attached to the camera that would fire the shutter from several feet away, also there used to be a separate self-timer mechanism that you could buy and screw in to the cable release port that would fire the shutter as well, for cameras without self timers. So its completely conceivable that they could have taken the photos themselves. -

The camera was Julien`s I would assume he and Florence took them it was a fancy spy camera
Remeber the guy who stole his car.. his girlfriend found it in the secret agent mans car. Hence the spy camera
I've got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that depend upon me
