Cut Before Release?

My mother had a small bit part in this film and can be glimpsed for a second or two in a couple of scenes. She claimed she had a larger part that got cut. She said her character and Kathryn Grant's character try to escape and at one point take a rowboat across the river, but are captured.
She said a finished version of the film was shown running about 100 minutes, without the prologue. Then they decided to add the prologue, and the film was trimmed, including her big scene, to keep it around 100 minutes!
She also talked about how the production was in full gossip mode because Kathryn Grant kept getting phone calls from Bing Crosby!!!
Other than the fact I can recognize my mother in the film, the rest is just what she told me, I've never researched it. -

Yes, "The Phenix City Story" was heavily cut before its release to satisfy the production code. Unfortunately, a good scene with James Edwards (as Zeke Ward)grieving for his murdered daughter was left on the cutting room floor as was the capture of Ellie Rhodes. Also left out was an attempted seduction of Richard Kiley by the nightclub singer.
