He made the deal with the Juaristas to support their attack for $100,000. As he was the only apparent survivor of the mercenaries he should've collected, but he just walked right by the gold wagon.
Guessing the film took place in around 1870, $100k would be around $2 million today, well worth the effort. -

He walked by because he was headed for a clinch with Nina. I'm sure he went back for his pay.
The Mexican revolutionaries, esp. Gen. Ramiriz (Morris Ankrum), were portrayed as honorable people. I'm sure that Ben got his $100,000 and everybody lived happily ever after.

There is one scene where Ben ( Gary Cooper) explains to Joe ( Burt Lancaster) that there are a lot of people depending on me. Basically he needed the money to rebuild his Louisiana Plantation. He is going to take the money ( and Nina ( Sara Montiel)) and go home and do that.
