Though I thought Donald O'Connor was in fine form but a bit miscast in this movie, I found it even more strange (if not ridiculous) that MM and Donald were cast as LOVERS. It just seemed totally unbelievable. She starts off in the movie not liking him while he was not to be discouraged. However, it just seemed like in the next scene, they're dating and holding hands. I never saw what made her suddenly fall in love with him.

I know. It was all too sudden. Just like when Merman's character takes a liking to Monroe's. It's an unbelievably sudden change of mind.

      "Naturally."

I enjoy Donald O'Connor but I agree, he was miscast in this film. No idea why but something about him doesn't quite fit the character and I also don't buy him as a love interest for MM.
I think the sudden change in the Vicky character towards Tim isn't suppose to appear sudden. They met, she didn't like him because he was making fun of her for being somewhat pretentious while still trying to pick her up. They meet again (presumably months later) and her career is starting up and she's less affected so she suddenly likes him. It still makes little sense but I believe we're suppose to think time has gone by and she mellowed.
Pretty standard thinking for a 50s flick. Same with Ethel Merman suddenly warming to Vicky. There's nothing in the film that indicates Vicky really does love Tim because she is seemingly using him and blowing him off but then she had a sudden change of heart when he disappears? Umok, I guess.

Why? None of Marilyn's husband were even good-looking. They looked mismatched too. I agree with the storyline though. It isn't every cohesive.

How about Yves Montand as her love interest then? Honestly by normal standards he's ugly, especially compared to DOC.
I'm sure lots of women will say YM has a special appeal, and I agree, but he's definitely not good looking. DOC is probably unsexy and looks like a silly boy, at least in this movie, but often MM was cast against men that were not flat-out hunks.

Hugh O'Brien, who had a small part in this film would have been more believable as MM's boyfriend, but though he could match her in looks, he didn't have her range as a singer, dancer, and acting.

I think Donald's terrific in the film, but I agree he and Marilyn aren't very believable together. I'd recast her instead of him. 🙂 Yes, yes, I know, 95 percent of the planet would disagree with me, but that's okay. I'm a big Donald fan (and I really only watch the film for him and Mitzi) . . . Marilyn I can take or leave.
