Interesting. I have been aware of many films gris over the years. Just never heard anyone state that term before!
Good description of this one. I love noir. But the ones that are cinematographically noir (stark and dark) as well as gritty and nasty. However, these films gris are great as well. Much less stark and dark, but still good tough characters slinging some good lines.

Just for the record, Robert Ryan did not play the same role (Earl Pfeiffer) in the Broadway play. That was played by Joseph Schildkraut. Ryan played Mae's brother, Joe Doyle.
