    Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — My Forbidden Past

    Sure, the movie was mediocre. And you never
    really
    find out what Barbara's grandmother did that was soooo notorious. Kind of a major thing to not reveal given that it drives a lot of Barbara's motivations and decisions throughout the film.
    I thought Robert Mitchum was the strongest thing about the movie. This being my first Ava film, I have to say, I wasn't really that impressed. Although, I am going to check out The Killers, as that looks awesome.
    Back to My Forbidden Past. I really loved the end of the movie, after Barbara testifies in court as to what really happened, that Paul killed Corinne, and that Mark was innocent.
    After Paul is taken away, Barbara has a break down of sorts, begging Mark to take her away so she doesn't have to face the town after admitting her true ancestry.
    Mark then says that there is no running away and she is going to have to face a lot: her role in Corinne's murder, her ancestry, the reaction of people in town, and for the first time ever in her life, she was really going to have to face herself. And that maybe, just maybe, if she does that, she'll be alright.
    I felt it was the one truly moving scene in the movie, for me anyway, and elevated it to a 6.5 from a 6. Still a low rating but there was at least one scene that moved me emotionally in this so I don't feel, as others have stated on the forum, that the whole film was a waste.

      My assumption was that her grandmother was either black or a witch or both.
      The only thing I didn't like about the ending was that we never found out if Mark was going to take her back or not. After all that trouble I wanted them together.

      Truth be told, I had to see you one more time, even if it was from a distance.

        I thought Ava Gardner was very pretty in her southern attire and did a good job with her part.
        <spoiler>
        The ending was a bit inconclusive as on the one hand, Dr Mark Lucas (Mitchum), now knows that Barbara (Gardner) coerced her cousin Paul to seduce Mark's wife and have Mark catch his wife committing adultery. On the other hand, Barbara did come forward to save Mark from a murder charge. Mark seems rather strait-laced, so it's hard to know how things would work out between him and Barbara, except that leaving New Orleans would seem wise for Barbara.
        The crime here was not really murder, as Paul reacted to Corinne's slapping him by pushing her away and she fell and hit the andiron. Given that Paul had no significant motive for murdering Corinne, he probably would have been charged with manslaughter.
        Not a long movie 1 hour and 10 minutes or a great movie, but I enjoyed some aspects of it, so I will give it a 7.
