I'm not too acquainted with quaint New Orleans customs, but Barbara's cousins were a little too close to her, including one who wanted to marry her.
Does someone have greater insight on this? Was marrying first or second cousins customary? I don't believe the film makes it clear whether Barbara's cousins were first or second, but I found it unusual. -

I think back in the day, marrying distant cousins were acceptable even promoted because it kept money in the family.
But it was implied in one scene that he had tried to rape her or that they had fooled around and she called him detestable. I don't think we were supposed to like him.
Truth be told, I had to see you one more time, even if it was from a distance.

Marrying your 2nd cousin is generally not considered incest.
I am not sure about Louisiana, but in many of the older states on the East Coast, it is legal to marry your first cousin. This is perhaps somewhat due to the fact that when the laws were written in the late 1700's, the states were somewhat sparsely populated and there might not have been a lot of suitable partners. Also I believe England allowed 1st cousin marriages at that time, and a lot of American law just carried over from English law.
I believe when one moves out to bible-belt states that 1st cousin marriage is considered incest in many states. -

Legally prohibited or not.
Constant intra-family procreation leads to blood diseases.
For religious reasons, many people don't want to believe it.
And then there's big whining and big health costs…and short lives.
