I hardly think Zero Mostel was able to climb a rope, he complained to Elia Zazan about all the running he had to do in previous scenes. The great Jack Palance was really on that rope to the ship after a stuntman failed. That was grit and ambition from someone in his first big screen role.

Agreed. Good catch.
I asked my wife if she knew what that device was for and when I told her, she fell apart, agreeing that it was great symbolism.
I wonder how many people caught that.
