In Vienna, they offer a tour of all the filming locations used in the city, as well as historical anecdotes of the filmmaking process and the post war years.
They used to take you down into the sewers, but they closed that part off, due to fears of terrorism I guess.
Anyway, it's a cool experience, and would highly recommend it if you ever visit.

That's so interesting. I would have thought most of it would be gone now, the blitzed parts of Vienna anyway. I would have loved to go down the sewers! They look more beautiful in the film than a lot of what gets knocked up above ground these days!

I was in Vienna in 2013. I didn't take the official tour, but I saw many of the shooting locations. My favorite experience was getting my photo taken in the same doorway where Harry Lime makes his amazing entrance.
I viewed the film both before leaving for Europe and after I returned.

Fears of an awful, overpowering smell, surely?
The very first question that popped into my head when watching the chase scenes through the sewers was whether that water they were treading in was real sewerage or not. However, I've since learned that they were partially filmed on a studio set and partially on the covered portion of the River Wien. That's a relief!
The bottom of the following page says that you
            can
tour the sewer system. I presume it is no longer used for its original purpose or they would probably struggle to get many paying customers!
