I absolutely loved this movie. I had to see in in two sittings, as I saw half on watchTCM.com, then missed the date. However, I was able to get the DVD through my local library (great print, tooan official WB Noir Collection; won't argue here about the "noir"). Lorre and Greenstreet looked like they were having a blast, with their banter and easy-going uneasiness. There were actually a couple of laugh-out-loud moments in the script.
The rest of the cast was superb. I especially enjoyed Victor Francen, an actor I hadn't been very aware of, previously. He was just fascinating to watch.
The whole film screamed "European!" in its sensibilities, interactions, subtlety of emotion. I loved the atmosphere and the whole aura of mystery. It's amazing how much plot could be "crammed" into the film's length; you hardly see that kind of filmmaking craft anymore.
I hope everyone discovers this film, which is a true gem. If you like anything of this genre, you'll LOVE this!
