Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Citizen Kane

    Ultimate_Bad-Ass — 9 years ago(May 16, 2016 07:57 AM)

I don't care if Citizen Kane is the best movie ever made but there are so many problems with that list.
Why the hell is Casablanca 2nd. Is it superior than The Godfather or Schindler's list. Only The Fellowship of the ring among the trilogy. I used to think The Return of the king is better. Where are other modern movies like The Departed or Fight Club. Isn't Fight Club a better modern thriller than Psycho. That list is partial towards modern movies. Pulp Fiction lies somewhere in 90s. Isn't Pulp Fiction critically a masterpiece but not in this case because it was added in the list after the original list was made.In that list, Even raiders of the lost ark is better than Pulp Fiction. So It's a wonderful life, more or less a mediocre movie is the 11th best movie ever made. A new hope is better than empire strikes back, empire strikes back us not even present in the list.

I know right! The Whyte Album especially should be on that list!

In my opinion, Casablanca is indeed superior to both The Godfather and Schindler's List.

Casablanca is superior to The Godfather, not Schindlers List. The former is a truly great movie but to me the latter is a work of emotional art

It must be such a shock for you that other people have different tastes in movies than you. How dare they!

The second and third Star Wars films and the second and third Lord of the Rings should both be on the list. Not just the first Star Wars and the first Lord of the Rings.
Metallica, Iron Maiden, and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fan

AFI's 100 years 100 things (Cheers, thrills, passions) and AFI's top 10 film genres are even bigger rubbish Just Saying
                    For Example:
In Animated Films there is Snow White and 7 dwarvs on first place because it was the most influential film in the animated film genre and The Lion King is only 4'rd
The Searchers as Greatest American Western of all time? I have always thought it's terrily overrated. The Wild Bunch or High Noon should be first
In Sports film the first place is Raging Bull. Really Perfect Film as Film but it's rarely about sport (boxing). The better Sport film is Rocky
And Yes, Wizard of Oz is Greatest Fantasy Film for the same reason as Snow White is Greatest Animated Film (To be Honest Citizen Kane is First Film on The Top 100 Films List for the same reason also) (Being most influential)
E.T. as Third Science Fiction ?! Really?! It's more like drama with that E.T. puppet from outer space. Where is Science Fiction there?
To Kill a Mockinbird is Greatest Courtroom? But there is only 1 scene of Courtroom into entire movie! 12 Angry Man should be first
And The Godfather is 11'nth most supsenseful, action packed and exiting?
In 100 Cheers i can agree with It's a Wonderful Life but not with To Kill a Mockinbird and E.T. as THAT inspiring films. And why is Shawshank Redemption on 23'rd place? Film that teaches you how to not give up in most hopeless time and place is so not inspiring according to critics?
The Way We Were, Dr.Zhivago and Love Story are better Romance Films than City Lights?
And So on, and so on

I dont necessarily disagree with the points you make but your recollection of
                        12 Angry Men
                        vs
                        To Kill A Mockingbird
in terms of onscreen courtroom time appears to actually be backwards. Think of how
                        12 Angry Men
opens: We see a very short introductory scene which takes place in the hallway of the courthouse. The camera then enters the courtroom, panning as the judge finishes reading the jury charge, followed by the bailiffs instruction, The jury will now retire. The jurors then exit and proceed to the deliberations room and remain there until they reach a verdict. We never see them again in the courtroom, right? The final scene takes place outdoors, when Joseph Sweeneys character McCardle introduces himself to Fondas character Davis.
Total time spent in the courtroom itself is less than 4 minutes if I recall correctly.
                        To Kill A Mockingbird
, comparatively, spends more time in the courtroom, as we hear actual testimony from the Ewells, Tom Robinson, and I believe Sheriff Tate as well.

I have never tought about that this way. I Think you may be right, but i always tought that 12 Angry man takes place in courthouse all the time (deliberations room is within courthouse).

Aye, but this is the part of your post I read and responded to:
"To Kill a Mockingbird is Greatest Courtroom? But there is only 1 scene of Courtroom into entire movie! 12 Angry Man should be first."
Did you mix the 2 films up in the typing somehow? That would make sense, since
                            12 Angry Men
does have only one scene actually inside the courtroom itself.

Fight club better thriller than Psycho? This made me lol so hard, I bet you would put all of Nolan's film in the top ten right?
