This is a great love story- but I am always moved each time by the tragedy of Isabella & Edgar.
They are the only real victims in this story- both of them having the misfortune to be pulled into the vortex of this intense love that Cathy & Heathcliff share. The scene on the stairs when Cathy tells Edgar that the marriage "must NOT BE!" and he looks at her and realizes that she has been playing a part all along is so sad. And the scene where Isabella begs Heathcliff to let his heart look at her just once, always brings me to tears.
They are actually the saddest characters because they have the unrealized love- whatever Cathy & Heathcliff's faults- they at least knew true love. -

I agree that Isabella was a victim within the turbulent relationship between Heathcliff and Cathy because she only became Heathcliff's wife due to his bitterness towards Cathy. However I also view Heathcliff as a victim in "Wuthering Heights". He always had a place in his heart for Cathy even though she rejected his love for Edgar's marriage proposal because it was the socially acceptable option. Heathcliff could never move on which resulted in his personality becoming spiteful, therefore having a negitive effect on himself and those around him.
Metaphorically there is truth to what Cathy told Heathcliff before her death, "if only I could hold you, till we're both dead". It seemed to be the case with Heathcliff spending the reminder of his days at Wuthering Heights longing for Cathy.

I agree that Heatcliff was a decent guy and he went through a lot of rotten treatment before he ended up as bitter and destructive. Having said that, being those times it was impossible for Cathy to ever get the chance to earn money for a proper living and Heatcliff didn't show any ambition.
Wonder if Cathy in in these days would have worked to better her status or would she still tell her man to bring her the world?
Don't tell me, it's no use to me. Tell yourself if you want to but don't tell me.
