So I e-mailed Jeff Bezos of Amazon, the company that owns IMDb and is supposedly the ones who handed down the order to close the boards.
Got this reply:

Hello,
We appreciate that you took the time to share your concerns with us.
Although IMDb.com is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amazon.com, it is a separate site and operates independently. We recommend you contact IMDbs support staff directly via the form located at http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/contact_form with any concerns you might have regarding their message boards.
I hope you have a great day.
Sounds like BS or what? Handing off the blame back to Col Needham. Who will probably say it came from Amazon. -

Well it passes the buck back to IMDb like it's their decision to close the boards, not Amazon's.
I don't think it's automated, since they addressed a type of disassociation with IMDb that would have to be written by someone.
But it doesn't concern me that much whether it's automated or not; the idea is the same, they're not taking responsibility.
If they were, the automated response would have been something like "Thank you for your concerns, however we have taken this decision after careful consideration " blah blah.
Just sayin'. -

They don't give a flying one in a snowstorm. I'm not quite sure what that means as I might have mixed my metaphors there.
But yeah. They're just a soulless corporation.
Sadly, I don't think it's going to harm traffic to the strictly information part of the site. I would love it if it did but I hate to say they will probably be fine without the message boards.
