An excellent film based on a great novel: 8.5/10. If you have Netflix, you should watch it asap.

Yes, I have seen the 1930 version, which was also excellent. I have not seen the 1979 version which was the weakest of the three.

I have the restored 1930 version, one of the great war movies of all time, and just as effective today as when it was new.
The archaic film and acting technique enhance the verisimilitude of the battle scenes, as though we are witnessing History through a lens into the past.
Unfortunately, I don't have Netflix, so I won't be able to check this one out, but I can't imagine a modern version having the same impact as the original.

excellent,
and so is the 2022 version. And the battle scenes in the 2022 version are even better than the 1930 ones imho.

Fairly worthless as an adaptation - I’m not sure the writers even read the novel, it’s practically unrecognisable - but it does have some moments of power and great visuals. I was hoping for more… 5/10.

Yes, it is very good…and very, very sad.
Apart of it that "1917" is about WWI also, don't see many similarities.
Anyhow, this thread landed in the thread-collection "War Films".

(2022) has an own Board. -
