I read Pauline Kael's "Hooked" last week, which covered films from 1985-88, so that's a lot of what I've been watching lately. I did try and watch Almodovar's "Law of Desire", but gave up on it and will have to go back to that later. I do like him.
But, Kael and so many other's have cited Morgan Freeman's performance as excellent, intense and deeply scary. I could go for some intense right about now!

I don't really like Almodovar. Have seen a few films of his and they didn't exactly resonate with me. They were either kinda quirky, or forced superficial to my mind.
I haven't seen SS. Will look forward to hearing your opinion.

I just got done watching "Street Smart". I thought it was passable, nothing great, but not boring.
Morgan Freeman was good, but I have to be honest, I didn't think his performance was all that. Maybe all the hype led me to expect more. He was scary, he was intense. Yes, fine. Not much else for me to say here. On the other hand, Christopher Reeve was not as bad as some people said. I just don't think he had much range as an actor. And when he acted tough, he was unconvincing. It was the character he played that I didn't like too much. Blessed people shouldn't be smug.
The best part about the movie was Kathy Baker's touching performance as a lonely prostitute. She was the only character I liked and cared about. Baker was heartbreakingly good. She outclassed the rest of the movie.- **1/2

I thought Morgan Freeman was good, but I thought Kathy Baker was the best thing in the movie. She was wonderful.
I loved "All About My Mother" and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown".
