Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — LGBT Film

    TibetteSharmen — 11 years ago(October 21, 2014 12:40 PM)

ever since Gotham has premiered the boards have steadly been filled with posts about "Gay Agendas", Homophobic posts, biphobic posts and Bi erasure. Very dissapointing, it seems to point to that sadly some people still think it is such an awful thing to have LGBT characters on shows in 2014.
All this despite the Lesbian character being a lesbian in the comics and the bisexual character not being properly explored or characterised in the comics, so they can't even blame it on "Not staying true to the characters".
I mean come on, are LGBT characters only allowed on Logo and Bravo now? Are Ryan Murphy shows the only ones not filled with hateful anti-LGBT posts?
    Damn, this is dissapointing. 😞
Just a rant folks I'm sorry but I felt this was an appropriate place to voice these concerns since this board deals with LGBT issues in film and TV.
    Peace!

      Don't let it dishearten you
      too
much. It's disturbing that these people exist, but they represent a minority; the bottom dregs of society. It just happens that IMDB's demographic skews very heavily to unrepentant racists, homophobes, and misogynists. It's not just Gotham, you find that on every board where these topics come up.

I don't blame you, it's depressing every time.

The truth of the matter is that, sadly in my own personal experience, that bi folk are often (if not always) treated as sort of a different type of person than either straight or gay people. I've honestly been told by more than one person to "choose" my preference. I don't think I really have one, which is why I'm an out bi woman. The sad fact is that, at least from an anthropological view, all people fall on a continuum of varying degrees of bisexuality, with very few falling into either the purely straight or purely gay categories. Those individuals who have never even once had a physical attraction or sexual impulse towards either the same (in the case of straight people) or the opposite (for the gay/lesbian individuals) are actually considered statistical outliers. We all are mostly some percentage bisexual. So I am always deeply discouraged or bothered or even hurt when a woman or man I have decided to share some time, effort, and attention to demand that I make a choice between the genders. I'm not sure I can - I find different things attractive about women and men. And the needs that women can fill are not usually fulfilled by men, and vice versa. So how am I to make a choice? Food for thought.
