I have suspected this for some time. I compared Wednesday puzzles from 2004-05 and 2022. Wednesday puzzles are medium difficulty. The average time it took me to complete a 2004-05 puzzle was 28 minutes. The average time it took me to complete a 2022 puzzle was 14 minutes.

Maybe you just didn't know as much back then as you do now. What is your age? If you are say in your 20s or 30s, then you wouldn't have as much pre-2004 knowledge as you do from 2004 until now.

I did both sets of puzzles last year. I don't think it has to do with not knowing contemporary knowledge from 2004-05. I think those were more difficult because they assumed a more literate and educated reader.

More likely the IQ of the average staff member has dropped as media adopted 'woke' anti-culture.

I only do Thu-Sun. I just redid 1999 and those puzzles seemed easier for me than the current ones. Back then they didn't seem to have as many special interest pop culture entries. Most of the time if I don't care about a subject, I'll have trouble with the answer.
