Story arcs typically mean 9 slow episodes where nothing happens, then hopefully a big payoff at the end that doesn't always come. Even if it does come, the show can only be watched once because it's too grueling to do through all over again. Can you imagine having to sit through The Walking Dead again? Not possible. Stand alone is far superior.

Stand alone. A story arc can still consist of stand alone episodes.

Depends on the genre and whether or not a show has an actual story.
            I must reverse my life
I can't live in the past
            Then set my soul free
            Belong to me at last

Stand alone. I've seen too many 2+part episodes that appear stretched from one that was originally written to stand alone.

Good question. I developed my preference at a young age and I still think stand alone episodes are more interesting. I only like story arcs when I'm watching soap operas.

Story arcs can be very frustrating. Stand alone for me.

Depends on the series and the overall storyline.
