I'd pay. If one tenth of regular posters would also, that ought to be a lot of revenue(?), enough to run the boards pay for a few mature moderators, still leaving plenty of profit(?) and an instant way to remove thousands of trolls and sock puppets.
But something tells me this is more about migrating users onto IMDbs social platforms that any problem with these boards(?)

Yeah I think their idea is that everybody will end up on Facebook, Twitter, etc. These guys aren't that stupid, they certainly believe this will not impact their bottom line in a negative way, and that alternatives like you suggest aren't worth bothering with. I'm sure they started to consider this step several years ago when new regulations forced them to remove direct links to Amazon from the site - with those in place they could easily track a certain amount of revenue that came directly from this site. Now they can't do that any way and they don't want to bother with anything complicated, just use existing platforms and assume that the number of loyal board users who will really care isn't worth worrying about.

I don't use Facebook or Twitter and I'm not all that clued in to the specific advantages they'd get from the influx but have a strong sense that they exist in terms of more monetisable data assets and other revenue. They probably think they're competing against themselves with these boards. As a filmmaker I have considered upgrading to a pro account but hope I never feel the need to put money in such calous and blunt hands. Always respected you, Oldale. Hope to run into you somewhere else down the line.
Cheers,
