Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Classic Film

    Thanks to
    @PygmyLion
for keeping this going last week!
The idea is this: what if the nominees for Best Picture each year weren't nominated? Which films should have taken their place in that scenario? Pick your alternate selections for Best Picture and, if you wish, mention anybody who you feel was overlooked in any other category. No need to confine yourself to the types of films which typically get nominated or to English-language cinema. If you missed the previous years, they can be found on the classic film board.
All films released in 1943 are eligible. The nominees were:
    Casablanca

    • Michael Curtiz
      For Whom the Bell Tolls
    • Sam Wood
      Heaven Can Wait
    • Ernst Lubitsch
      The Human Comedy
    • Clarence Brown
      In Which We Serve
    • Noel Coward and David Lean
      Madame Curie
    • Mervyn LeRoy
      The More the Merrier
    • George Stevens
      The Ox-Bow Incident
    • William A. Wellman
      The Song of Bernadette
    • Henry King
      Watch on the Rhine
    • Herman Shumlin
      A very strong list, with
      Casablanca
obviously being one of the most-beloved winners of all. And
      The Ox-Bow Incident
is a very strong second, in my opinion.
      My alternate nominees:
      Shadow of a Doubt
    • Alfred Hitchcock
      Five Graves to Cairo
    • Billy Wilder
      Hangmen Also Die
    • Fritz Lang
      Journey Into Fear
    • Norman Foster
      Day of Wrath
    • Carl Theodor Dreyer
      The Seventh Victim
    • Mark Robson
      Casablanca
still wins for me in this scenario, but
      Shadow of a Doubt
      moves to the #2 slot.

      Casablanca
is definitely a keeper from the original list, as is The
      Ox-Bow Incident
. I might keep a few of the others like
      Watch on the Rhine
      ,
      For Whom the Bell Tolls
      , and
      In Which We Serve
      .
      From your list
      Shadow of a Doubt
      is one of my favorites.
Even though I'm not a big Orson Welles fan, I like him a lot in
      Jane Eyre
with Joan Fontaine. I really like
      Assignment in Brittany
with Jean-Pierre Aumont. I enjoyed watching
      Sahara
with Humphrey Bogart just the other week. I am not a big fan of The
Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
, but some people really go for it. Then there is the submarine movie -
      Destination Tokyo
      .
      Lassie Come Home
      for the dog lovers.
      Edge of Darkness
about Norwegians fighting back against the Nazis with Errol Flynn and Ann Sheridan.
      My Nominees list is:
      Casablanca

      • Michael Curtiz
        Shadow of a Doubt
      • Alfred Hitchcock
        The Ox-Bow Incident
      • William A. Wellman
        Assignment in Brittany
      • Jack Conway
        Sahara
      • Zoltan Korda
        Jane Eyre
      • Robert Stevenson
        Edge of Darkness
      • Lewis Milestone
        Watch on the Rhine
      • Herman Shumlin
        In Which We Serve
      • Noel Coward, David Lean
        Lassie Come Home
      • Fred M. Wilcox
        I agree with you.
        Casablanca
        wins with
        Shadow of a Doubt
        second.

We didn't get much response for this one. Perhaps, people are satisfied with
        Casablanca
at the top. It didn't surprise me that we didn't get a lot of response for the early 1930s, when people hadn't watched many of the movies.
