Everyone starts being nice to you. People you hardly know saying "If there's anything we can do" I suppose it's just a standard gesture, but what could they possibly do. Also when people express their well meaning condolences it's difficult to know how to reply, a thank you, perhaps?

I thought this was going to be another one of your jokes and was waiting for a punchline of, "We lost her when we went shopping. We hope she turns up soon."
All you can do is be nice and polite and be grateful for the shows of support.
