Did undercover police cars really have those lights on top?

Mostly on TV shows and in some movies of the 70's and 80's there were undercover police cars that had a single flashing light on top of the drivers side which the driver reached up and stuck onto the roof of the car.
Since I grew up in a small town and not a large city, like NY or LA, I never saw these IRL.
So was this just something invented for TV and movies or were there any real undercover cop cars that really used these?

Good God!
If you try to give him an answer, he will only ask you if that is a fact, or just your opinion.
Someone explain something to this idiot. This is not Google.
You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.
