Here's the album review I just wrote up:
Just listened to Demi's new album and wanted to put down my initial thoughts after my first listen all the way through.- Confident: I liked this one a lot at first, but over the past few weeks it hasn't aged that well. While I do enjoy listening to it, I think the chorus where it goes into the minimalist beat should have had more bass. Like all the other recent pop songs this part mimics, giving it good bass gives it a great punch (examples: Dark Horse, Talk Dirty, Problem, Nobody Love). Now one of the positives: the background chanting that kicks in the second chorus really elevates the song and becomes by far the catchiest part of the song. Overall, while I like it, i don't think I will listen to it a whole lot.
- Cool For The Summer: I've given my review of the song in another 1354thread, but essentially I've been raving about this song since its release. Her best single since Here We Go Again, and maybe ever; my favorite pop song of the year. Excellent all around.
- Old Ways: This one is kinda good and catchy, especially the chorus. When I first heard the snippet, the beat drop was unnecessary, but now I think it's fun. Good lyrics?
- For You: Very loud chorus, but also catchy sound. Great vocals.
- Stone Cold: When I first heard the snippet, I was quick to shut it off. At the time I was turned off by the over singing. Now, it doesn't peeve me as much, but it may turn off other people at first because it is a lot haha. Still, the lyrics are good and the song is kind of catchy. I have a feeling Demi will pick this as Single #3.
- Kingdom Come: An early favorite of mine. I had high expectations, not because I am a big Iggy fan (although she has a few singles I like), but because I felt a collaboration between these two could be awesome. This mostly fulfills my expectations. Iggy's verse is kinda weak, but all of Demi's parts are very cool. Can't wait to hear this on the radio

- Waitin' For Ya: The chorus is kinda catchy. The concept reminds me of the boxing ring. Sirah's part doesn't really jump out at me that much, as of now.
- Wildfire: Something about this reminds me of the scene in the first Hunger Games movie where Katniss is in the arena and wakes up and sees that a fire is getting close to where she is. Anyway, the chorus and verses are good, and I like the overall feel of this one. I can see myself listening to this one more.
- Lionheart: I hear this song is about Demi's dog that passed away, but the lyrics don't really show thatDemi sounds good on the chorus, but to me the rest of the song falls pretty flat.
- Yes: Everything about this screams "wedding", like the narrator is at the altar. A little sappy for me, but the lyrics are decent. I'm not sure how often I'll be listening to it, though. Great vocals, of course.
- Father: I'm kind of impressed by this one. Not only are the lyrics strong, as is the inclusion of a gospel choir, but Demi emotes through the microphone like never before. Very emotional and easily relatable. Good job. Third album in a row with song(s) directed at her father.
Deluxe tracks - Stars: This one caught me off-guard, especially after a song like "Father", but I am surprised at how cool it is. The lyrics are fun, and while the concept isn't completely original, it still is pretty enjoyable. Could have used another beat drop at the end though.
- Mr. Hughes: I guess this one is directed at an ex, but this one doesn't really get off the ground for me. The lyrics have attitude that I wish was more apparent in the production. I don't really see this one as that fun.
Cool For The Summer remixes: Basic dance remixes. No offense to those who produced them, but I just can't get into them. I would have appreciated if they were left off the deluxe album and put on a separate EP for those who want them. If they had to include remixes, I wish they would have tacked on a studio version of the Iggy remix of "Cool For The Summer" that Demi performed at the VMAs.
Overall: After one listen all the way through, I guess I'm glad I didn't get my hopes up that high, because while there are songs I see myself listening to again, there are many that don't seem to hit the mark yet. If I had expected an album as good as Unbroken, or even DEMI, I would be disappointed, but for whatever reason, I tried not to hold such a high bar this time around. The album as a whole exemplifies the theme of confidence, but sonically, I don't see a lot of an artistic identity present. That is a complaint Demi gets a lot, and I feel that it's kind of true in the case of this album. Pop-rock is where Demi BELONGS, and that's one of the reasons why I love "Cool For The Summer" so much: because it is a perfect blend of her newer dance-pop sound with the pop-rock influence from her Disney days. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a poor representation of the rest of the album.

Stars- By far my favorite song. I can even see this song as a single. It should have been on the "normal" edition of the album. I don't know why artists always put the really good songs on their Deluxe editions!
Waitin For You- I love the grittiness of this song. Demi sings this song with a lot of attitude!
Yes- I like the lyrics of this song. I also like Demi's vocals on this song.
I don't think this is her best album. I admit I was a bit underwhelmed, but it's still nice to have new music from her! -

I personally thought that while Unbroken and Demi had their fair share of good songs, as an album they were mostly generic. Confident is a lot better and for once I can say that I don't just love her voice but her music as well. Stars was the worst on the album for me.

I just did another listenand
Confident
is just one big meh for me. The only two songs that are on constant repeat for me are "Waiting For Ya" and "Stars". The rest of songs are completely bland, generic, and all over the place. The lack of coherency is very pervasive. -
