Is he supposed to be Irish or Scottish in this film?
When I first heard him speak, he sounded Irish but then later he sounded more Scottish.
I didn't think he ever sounded English.
Did anyone else find his accent to be here and there/wishy-washy/undecided?

I thought he was trying to sound less Irish to fit in with the group because the accent was weird but it blew my mind when I found out he was supposed to be scottish lol

I didn't think much about it until he started sounded Scottish toward the end. I may have been sidetracked by his added bulk. Was that real, or padding for the part?
There's someone in my head but it's not me.

For someone whom has set herself up as the arbiter of all things grammatical - you spelled "imitation" incorrectly. Thought you'd appreciate having that pointed out.

Occasionally I thought he was trying to sound American.da0 I did not get Scottish. But I was also wondering about the weight thing. Was that for the role?

John Cairncross was Scottish. He was born in Lesmahagow, which is South East from Glasgow.
I thought Allen did the accent pretty well.
