Mel B, Mel C and Victoria went to an open audition for a new girl group that was advertised in The Stage newspaper, a few weeks later Geri auditioned and joined the group alongside Mel B, Mel C, Victoria and at the time another girl named Michelle. Michelle left the group within a few weeks as supposedly her mother became seriously ill but rumours suggest the truth is the other girls just didn't get on her with and she was replaced by Emma.
The girls were together for almost a year before they even released Wannabe and they lived together during that time as well. They got restless with the record company that founded the group as nothing was happening so they all quit the record label and scoured the country and luckily were picked up by Simon Fuller who turned them into megastars.
